In November 2021 the IOW team visited the local partner CITET for the first marine litter sampling campaign.
Over a period of two weeks, the two teams surveyed different areas, such as Hammamet, Hammam Sousse, Monastir, and Bizerte using several monitoring methods to investigate beach pollution and underwater litter in marinas. During this mission, several stakeholders (NGOs, representatives of municipalities, APAL) were able to attend and support the sampling campaign. More than 20.000 litter pieces were collected and analysed during this campaign. The majority of the litter found was plastic, originates from beach users, and consisted of e.g.: bags, candy and candy wrappers, plastic caps from drink bottles and other non-identifiable plastic pieces.
