Parliament Committee Visits Alexandria’s Beaches: Strengthening the Fight Against Marine Litter

On 27 June 2025, the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport had the privilege of hosting the Egyptian Parliament Local Development Committee for an insightful visit to the beaches of Alexandria. This event formed part of the ongoing activities under the TOuMaLi – Prevention of Tourism Marine Litter project, which is dedicated to reducing marine litter through innovation, collaboration, and evidence-based action.

During the visit, our team presented the latest advancements in beach cleaning technology and demonstrated how data-driven approaches are being used to monitor, collect, and analyse marine litter along the Alexandrian coastline. By integrating modern equipment with systematic data collection, the project is able to identify patterns of waste accumulation and develop targeted interventions that address the most pressing challenges.

The engagement of the Parliament Local Development Committee was particularly significant. Their presence not only highlighted the importance of aligning policy with on-the-ground initiatives but also fostered a constructive dialogue on how legislative support can enhance the impact and sustainability of local actions. The Committee was able to see first-hand the practical results of the pilot activities and discuss the opportunities for scaling up these efforts across other coastal regions in Egypt.

This visit marks an important step in bridging the gap between research, practical implementation, and policy development. It underscores the vital role of multi-stakeholder collaboration in achieving lasting change and demonstrates how pilot projects, when supported by informed policy, can inspire broader transformation in marine litter management.

The Arab Academy team remains committed to building on the momentum generated by this visit. We look forward to continued cooperation with government bodies, local communities, and project partners to ensure cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable beaches for Egypt, now and in the future.
