Beach Monitoring and Training Sessions in Tunisia - October 2023
As part of the activities of the TouMali project and in particular within the framework of work package IV "Development and implementation of a beach and port pollution monitoring and assessment programme" and work package VI "Dissemination, outreach, awareness raising and capacity building", CITET, in collaboration with the German partner IOW (Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde) and the municipalities of Bizerte, Hammamet and Hammam Sousse, organized training workshops and beach monitoring campaigns from 7 to 15 October 2023.
The training sessions and knowledge transfer, which aim to raise awareness and knowledge about marine litter prevention, were specifically aimed at associations working to protect and preserve the environment in the regions of Bizerte, Hammamet and Sousse.
In parallel to these training sessions, which focused on the "OSPAR International Standardized Method" for monitoring marine litter and its application at beach level, a marine litter monitoring campaign was organized on six stretches of beach in Cap Angela, Sidi Salem-Bizerte, two beaches in Hammamet and two beaches in Hammam Sousse.
This monitoring campaign, which also involves non-governmental organizations, will make it possible to set up a long-term monitoring program that will continue beyond the duration and location of the project in order to follow the evolution of the quantity and type of macro-litter found on the beaches.
