Background
On the occasion of National and World Environment Day 2025, the International Center for Environmental Technologies of Tunis (CITET) organised an impactful awareness and environmental action day in Hammam Sousse, as part of the TouMaLi project—“Contribution of a sustainable waste management system in the tourism sector to protect marine ecosystems.” Held on 25 June 2025, the event brought together representatives from the project Steering Committee (COPIL), local authorities, and civil society, demonstrating a strong, united commitment to environmental protection.
Strong Institutional Commitment
The opening ceremony was marked by the presence of the Director General of CITET, the Secretary General of the Municipality of Hammam Sousse, and the CEO of the Studies and Development Company of Sousse North. In her address, the Director General of CITET outlined the project’s key objectives: reducing plastic waste at source, improving collection and sorting systems, and actively involving local authorities, civil society, and the private sector. She highlighted the innovative and participatory approach of the project, designed not only to protect marine ecosystems but also to build local capacity for sustainable waste management—offering a model that can be replicated in other coastal cities.
The Secretary General of Hammam Sousse Municipality underscored the importance of technical and institutional cooperation, affirming that the TouMaLi project directly supports municipal efforts to combat pollution and strengthens local environmental governance. Meanwhile, the CEO of the Studies and Development Company of Sousse North praised the exemplary collaboration, noting its positive impact on the tourism sector and encouraging further commitment to eco-responsible practices.
Launch of Concrete Solutions
A highlight of the day was the presentation of CITET’s achievements within the TouMaLi project, including sustainable waste management actions in Hammam Sousse’s pilot area, progress in beach pollution monitoring, and the support provided to the HoReCa sector in developing waste management systems.
A key moment was the technical presentation by Way Out, the supplier of Zigofilters. These innovative devices are designed to capture solid waste in stormwater drains before it can reach the sea, providing a practical and adaptable solution for coastal municipalities. The official launch of Zigofilter installation on Hammam Sousse’s stormwater drains represents a preventive and sustainable approach to tackling marine litter, directly reducing coastal pollution.
Strategic Planning and Community Engagement
The day also included the 7th Steering Committee meeting, bringing together national partners to review progress, identify challenges, and plan next steps in a collaborative spirit. The municipality took the opportunity to distribute the approved copy of Agenda 21 for Hammam Sousse, reaffirming its commitment to environmental standards and local system development aligned with both national and international frameworks.
By combining awareness-raising, concrete field actions, and strategic planning, this event further strengthened local momentum for environmental protection. It stands as a testament to the shared commitment to building cleaner, more resilient, and sustainable tourist destinations in Tunisia and beyond.
