During the World Environment Day celebration, June 5 2023, the Alexandria Governorate community celebrated with Her Excellency Minister Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, this day in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina - the Citadel of Culture in Egypt and the southern Mediterranean.

The Arab Academy had the largest participation by presenting, TouMaLi project, one of the joint projects with neighbour countries in the Mediterranean region, including Tunisia and Morocco, the University of Rostock in Germany, and many German companies with experience in this field, funded by the German Ministry of Environment and under the auspices and management of the Egyptian Ministry of Environment.

The project aims to mitigate the effects of marine waste in order to support tourism activities in the beaches and hotels sector, where Prof. Dr. Alaa Abdel Bary - Vice President of the Academy and Project Manager, presenting the activities of the project and its achievements, as well as future steps.

The Academy, represented in that project and under the directives of His Excellency the Minister of Environment, held a competition among hotels in Alexandria in terms of adherence to environmental standards and waste management over the course of a full month.

Her Excellency the Minister with Dr.Alaa Abdel Bary distributed shields and certificates of excellence today.

At the end of the celebration, Her Excellency the Minister of Environment launched an initiative to hold a competition between beaches throughout the summer months, similar to the hotel competition, run by the TouMali project for the cleanest beach that applies waste management standards, provided that the prizes are distributed at the end of the season under the supervision of the Ministry of Environment and the Governorate of Alexandria.
