Sustainability in Action: TouMaLi Project Empowers Hotels in Essaouira
In May 2025, the TouMaLi Project took significant strides toward advancing sustainable tourism in Morocco by conducting a comprehensive series of hotel visits and training sessions in Essaouira. Over the course of the week, the project team engaged with managers, hygiene teams, and kitchen staff from approximately 20 hotels, delivering targeted guidance on sustainable waste management practices.
The initiative, implemented in close cooperation with Cadi Ayyad University and BlackForest Solutions GmbH, focused on introducing and strengthening waste segregation systems within the hospitality sector. Participating hotels received designated waste bins and specially designed instructional posters, which will remain on display to reinforce the knowledge and best practices shared during the training sessions. This approach ensures that the impact of the workshops endures, supporting the hotels in maintaining organised and efficient waste management systems long after the project team’s visit.
The training sessions were designed to be highly interactive and practical, offering hands-on demonstrations in proper waste sorting and management. By working directly with hotel staff, the TouMaLi team was able to address specific challenges and tailor solutions to the unique needs of each establishment. The presence of representatives from local municipalities and the Ministry of Tourism further amplified the reach and impact of the initiative, highlighting the importance of collaboration between the private sector and public authorities in achieving lasting change.
The week also marked the beginning of the documentation phase for the project’s final outcome video. On the first day of training, Anna Maria Link captured footage that will be featured in a film showcasing the achievements of the TouMaLi – Prevention of Tourism Marine Litter project across Morocco, Egypt, and Tunisia. This video will serve as a valuable tool for knowledge exchange and inspiration, demonstrating the tangible results of cross-sector partnerships in the region.
By the end of the week, all 20 participating hotels had successfully implemented new waste segregation measures, setting a strong example for the wider hospitality industry in Essaouira and beyond. The TouMaLi Project looks forward to sharing further updates, including the newly scheduled conference in late November, where the project’s most impactful achievements and behind-the-scenes efforts will be presented to a broader audience.
Through continued collaboration and knowledge sharing, the TouMaLi Project remains committed to supporting the transition to more sustainable tourism and waste management practices, ensuring a cleaner and greener future for Morocco’s coastal destinations.
